Dr. Orestes Rivada-Wheelaghan

Ramón y Cajal Researcher

Orestes (born 1985 in Seville, Spain), obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Oviedo and received his MSc and Ph.D. degree in inorganic chemistry at the University of Seville in Spain, under the supervision of Dr. Salvador Conejero. After two years working as a post-doctoral with Prof. David Milstein at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), developing iron-based green homogeneous catalysis. Orestes moved to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (Japan) as a JSPS Fellow where he designed and developed multimetallic complexes to study meta–metal cooperation.  Between 2019 and 2022, Orestes worked as a Junior MOPGA Laureate at the Laboratoire d’Electrochimie Moleculaire (Université Paris Cité) in collaboration with the renowned group in molecular electrochemistry and electrocatalysis REACTE, led by Prof. M. Robert. This position allowed him to build an electrochemical/organometallic lab from scratch and start his own team while learning the theoretical and experimental techniques used in molecular electrochemistry.

From March 2022, Orestes has stablished his research team at the Instituto the Investigaciones Químicas (IIQ).

His interest spans from organometallic chemistry to molecular electrocatalysis, including different modes of cooperative molecular activation and its use in energy storage application.

Carlos Martínez Ceberio

Predoctoral candidate FPI. 03/2023 -

Carlos (1998, Madrid) obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid. He spent a year as a research intern in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry where he carried out his Final Degree Project which consisted of the synthesis of new molecular liquid crystalline and luminescent materials.
In 2021 he started a Master's Degree in Nanoscience and nanomaterials at the same university where he synthesized and studied a series of organometallic compounds. His Master's Thesis at the department of Inorganic chemistry consisted of the design and preparation of liquid crystalline and luminescent bifunctional materials based on transition-metal-containing species. From this work, he successfully published a scientific paper at the Journal of molecular liquids 2023, 385, 122290.
He is currently working on a FPI contract where developing bimetallic complexes based on transition metals to explore their electrocatalytic application.

Miguel Ángel Martín Neri

Contrato Investigación. 11/2023 -

Miguel (1999, Ecija, Seville) obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Cordoba. He spent two years as a research intern in the Department of Organic Chemistry where he carried out his Final Degree Project which consisted of the synthesis of cobaloximes supported on MOFs for the production of hydrogen through photocatalysis.

In 2022 he started a Master's Degree in Synthetic Chemistry and Industry in Bilbao at the University of the Basque Country, where he developed techniques in the study of the synthesis of organic compounds. He developed his Master's Thesis at the Institute of Biophysics in Leioa, synthesising polymers to functionalise gold nanoparticles and carry out bioorthogonal chemistry.

He is currently working on a research contract funded by the Junta de Andalucía where he will develop bimetallic complexes based on transition metals and study their electrocatalytic application.

Jose Francisco Rizo Guitard

FORMER Master Student (2022/2023)

José (born 2000 in Seville, Spain) obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Seville. In his last year, he did an organic chemistry internship program, where he based his degree's final work on the synthesis of novel chiral organoboron tri-arylic systems with CPL properties at Lassaletta's Group in the Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas (IIQ).
To satisfy his organometallic's interests, and learn more about this topic, during his ongoing Master of Advanced Studies in Chemistry, he has joined our group where he will study molecular electrocatalysis using transition metal-based complexes, stabilized by pyrazine-based platforms.
